Participants of the 2013 editors trip Frankfurt

It’s summer time and for our colleagues at our foreign offices this means packing their bags and hopping on a plane to Germany. They’re not coming alone, mind you. Almost every year, the GBO New York, the GBO New Delhi and the Book Information Centre in Moscow organise editor trips to Germany. In June, a delegation of Brazilian STM publishers will also be visiting their German counterparts.

Small Publishers, Big Impact

For the 14th time , the GBO New York is taking a group of American editors to Germany. During the week-long trip, they will get to know the German publishing world and meet a wide range of German editors, rights directors and other publishing professionals. This year, the group will start out in Berlin on 22 June, where they will learn about the capital’s history from political publisher Ch. Links, visit bookstores and some Berlin-based publishing houses like Suhrkamp and Aufbau Verlag. They will also have the chance to attend an all-day conference on the topics of new German literature and digital publishing at the Börsenverein.

Moving on to Frankfurt, the American publishers will be guests at S. Fischer Verlag and Frankfurter Verlagsanstalt and spend their last day at the Haus des Buches, with panel discussions and a Book Bazaar.

Riky Stock, the GBO’s director, says: “I’m very excited about the group this year. I’ll have Sebastian Budgen (Verso Books), Will Evans (Deep Vellum), Sarah Fan (The New Press), Erika Goldman (Bellevue Literary Press), Sarah MacLachlan (House of Anansi Press, Canada), Edward Nawotka (Publishing Perspectives) and Aaron Petrovich (Akashic Books) coming to Germany with me.”

Erika Goldman, too, is looking forward to the trip: “I hope to gain a better understanding of the German publishing scene to create lasting connections with editors and publishers who have compatible literary values and interests. If possible, it would be great to have these things lead to shared publishing projects!”

From Russia, with love

Brazilian STM Publishers are visiting their German counterparts

From 22 to 27 June, Marifé Boix-Garcia, Vice President Business Development Southern Europe & Latin America, and Ricardo Costa, associate partner of the Frankfurt Book Fair, will take a group of five Brazilian publishers to visit German publishing houses: “As a result of the Brazilian Guest of Honour presence in Frankfurt last year, we are offering this trip in order to further enhance the contacts between German and Brazilian publishers. We believe that there are a few similarities between the two markets, so we are “exploring” ways to tie the two countries closer together. Two years ago, a group of children’s publishers visited Germany, this year we are focusing on STM publishers,” Marifé Boix Garcia said. Participants this year are Eduardo Blucher, CEO at  Editora Blucher, Ana Paula Matos, Publisher at Editora Saraiva, Amarylis Manole, President, and Eliane Usui, Editor at Editora Manole and Paula Cajaty, Publisher at Editora Jaguatirica Digital.

The participants will arrive in Frankfurt on 22 June and will start their trip with a welcome dinner in Frankfurt. The tour ends on 27 June in Berlin. In between, there’s a lot to be done. Marifé Boix-Garcia will take the Brazilian Publishers to  Gabal Verlag in Offenbach, Wiley-VCH in Weinheim, Springer in Heidelberg, Alfred Kröner Verlag and Georg Thieme Verlag in Stuttgart as well as to de Gruyter and Hogrefe Verlag in Berlin. They will also be visiting the VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) and the Ibero-American Institute (IAI).
